from what I noticed on my recent flying trip you can go over the 50 lbs, you'll just have to pay more. On American it was $15 for the first piece of luggage that was under 50 lbs and went up in price incrementally based on weight from there. i'm sure if you go to your airlines' website, the policies are listed somewhere.
