Halloween Festivities

This year because everyone was sick, we did not get together with my sisters' families. We managed to have fun anyway, despite the coughing and hacking that took place.

Elly waiting patiently for Eden's class to come through the costume parade at her school.

The annual carving...

These girls love the goo.

Our three jacks in a row. Eden chose to carve the nasty side of the pumpkin for extra scariness.

Momma doing hair for the two fairies.

Everyone's favorite...makeup time! I think the kids love the fact they get to wear makeup on Halloween even more than the candy part!

Don't ask about the horns. Not sure.

Pretty little fairy!

And another pretty fairy!

Mascara!

Strike a pose girlfriends.

The candy bowl!

Esias was a little discontent today, so we waited to put his costume on. He tolerated it like a good little froggy.

Hey Ladies.

Eden basically just told me to get the camera out of her face. I'm Mommarazzi.

This girl is always smiles.

We always go visit our neighbor Betty right away on Halloween! She's our honorary grandma since we can't always see our real ones on Halloween!

Pics from Eden's Birthday

Eden's gifts laid out before she woke up...along with her lopsided somewhat Whoville-ish cake.

Eden had requested a three-tiered cake. This is what I came up with in my chest congestion coma.

Elly waking up on Eden's birthday.

Eden waking up...the drama begins...

So excited over the miniature American Girl doll named "Kaya."

Opening the South Africa Peek-a-Boo petite doll.

This is Elly sharing her seal on her special day. She was so excited. The seal was her 'unbirthday' gift she got to get at Build-a-Bear.

That night, we ate cake!

Our front yard was covered in beautiful yellow leaves!

What a week!

Oh my, this week was the longest week of my life, barring maybe all the other weeks that contained courtdates!

Sunday found us home from church, again, for the upteenth week in a row, because we had coughs and apparently the cry room has been demolished at church? My cousin was here staying with us, so we hung out with him. We took Eden to the mall (despite me feeling like poo poo) and let her spend her birthday money a day early since her b'day was on a school night. She chose to go to Build-a-Bear instead of get her ears pierced. We had a good ol' time at the mall- Dan took the girls to the aviation exhibit at the museum while Esias and I walked around Target.

We came home and I made a birthday cake for Eden, brownies for her class, and gathered snacks for Elly's class (Monday was Eden's birthday and Elly's special day at school). I stayed up way too late, made a huge mess, and went to bed feeling pretty crappy! Monday morn, took the kids to school, ran to Michael's and Target to get kid's costumes, and headed back to Elly's school to videotape her "special sharing" time. Esias, bless his heart, fell asleep in the stroller.

By Tuesday, I was full-blown sick as a dog. I had trouble breathing. I woke up at 5am and could not get a breath. I took a couple of puffs of Elly's breather and then woke Dan up. He tried to get me to sit in the hot steamy bathroom but that wasn't helping. Finally, I went outside in the cold air and was able to breathe. Dan called Kelly (friend) and she came and took me to the ER to be safe.

The ER was empty which was surprising. I got right in and all the staff agreed that my lungs sounded fine. Of course, once you get there and breathe in the night air, you feel better than in that moment of panic when you can't catch your breath. Anyway, I was glad I didn't need a chest x-ray. I was sent home with some cough meds and albuterol.

Tuesday and Wednesday I spent in a total zombie state, eating cough drops by the dozen and dosing myself with Tussin, Tylenol and Ibuprofen. I was hacking and coughing up a lung, with an extremely sore throat and an ear ache. It felt terrible. Dan was able to take those two days off, but it remains to be seen if we'll get paid for them or not. Either way, it was a necessity. I was not able to take care of the kids one bit! At that point, Elly had a fever too so we would not have been able to get childcare if we needed to. So it worked out. I slept in and out all those two days and woke up Thursday to find Dan with a fever. Shoot! Esias was the last man standing!

Thursday I went to the doctor and tested negative for H1N1 which was good, except that meant Esias could not get Tamiflu and #2, that I might get that next! Arg. I started to feel a slight bit better, and by better, I mean I could make a cohesive sentence.

Friday Dan was achey and sore and Esias had the fever. Elly's was gone by this time and mine was too. I still felt achey but able to do household chores again. Dan stayed home (this time able to take sick time, thank goodness) and worked on his laptop while I watched the kids and cleaned. Even not feeling 100%, it felt so good to clean my kitchen, fix food for my family, and be back at the helm! We took it easy all day (I ran in to Eden's school with Elly to see her in her costume parade) and then put the kids to bed at 7:30pm. Phew! What a week.

Nothing like feeling sick and unable to do your normal to make you appreciate your normal day! I wanted nothing more than to do dishes, make meals, and clean up after my brood!

Change

Dan was feeding Esias, which is a natural time where we try to encourage him to use sounds. He is still no making babbling sounds (dada, baba, mama, etc). I sort of sighed out of discouragement that he is not making these age appropriate sounds and said,

"Oh Esias, our little mute."
"Yeah," Dan said, "It's sort of a nice change."

Sick of Being Sick.

So I am slowly creeping out of the chest congestion nastiness that has plagued me since last week. Finally when I cough it doesn't feel like someone shoved a stake in my heart. Dan (bless him) has stayed home since Tuesday to allow me to sleep. He's sleeping now, hoping to ward off the hellaciousness that my doctor is calling "parainfluenza." In other words, something that feels like flu but isn't. Whatever. I tested negative for swine flu but these rapid tests are like 50% accurate so that makes me feel really good.

Esias remains ok, he is coughing some (but he does) and has a little runny nose. Elly had a fever yesterday but is ok today. She is coughing. Just to be safe, she is missing school again tomorrow (unfortunately, missing her school's pumpkin party as well). Eden is ok, her cough lingers but she is normal and has been fever free for a week. Oh, winter. It's only October and I am already over cold and flu season!

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Squares

Ingredients

Makes 24

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin-pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree
  • 1 package (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line bottom and sides of a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with foil, leaving an overhang on all sides. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, pie spice, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  2. With an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar on medium-high speed until smooth; beat in egg and vanilla until combined. Beat in pumpkin puree (mixture may appear curdled). Reduce speed to low, and mix in dry ingredients until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips.
  3. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan. Bake until edges begin to pull away from sides of pan and a toothpick inserted in center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached, 35 to 40 minutes. Cool completely in pan.
  4. Lift cake from pan (using foil as an aid). Peel off foil, and use a serrated knife to cut into 24 squares.

The Flu or something like it.

Getting over the flu took lots of Qubo and fluids.

It was difficult keeping E-man out of the "sick zone."

He thinks no-no is funny.

Day 3 of the flu, Eden felt good enough to dance a little with brother.

This is his favorite mode of transportation righrt now.

Poor Elly, feeling fine, was subjected to lots of indoor time and tv because of Eden not feeling well. So we painted. A lot.

And danced some more.
