The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree

Elly has her mother's tendency to trip over words or make up words when we can't think of words. Yesterday at lunch, she wanted more applesauce, and this is what we heard:

"Can I have more apple pie? Apple...apple...apple crips? Applesauce!!"
This wait is getting difficult. Please pray for me that I would be still and know that God is God. I am becoming incredibly impatient (me? never!) and losing hope a bit. I know this will happen when it happens but I am having trouble focusing on anything else, and I have two beauties here that need my attention, and an occasional red-head too :) Not to mention my dear husband of 9 years tomorrow.

More Birthday Fun

I am beginning to think the world revolves around me :) Yesterday I received in the mail a package from a certain desert-dwelling friend (Kim) which contained 30 gifts, one to be opened each day for thirty days! That will be fun!! Thanks, Kim!!

Also, Dan and I got a spontaneous date night when Brynn offered to come watch the girls since I had kept Marcus. So we went and spent my b'day money- I got some new kicks (very cute Nikes to help me with my walking goals!), a shirt, some underoos, and some clearance flip flops for myself ($1.64 ya'll!). Dan had been in another aisle at Target when I picked up the flip flops and when he found me, I said, "Check these out, for $1.64!" And he said, "For Eden?"

Naturally Iowa

If any of you drink or would like to try Organic Milk, I urge you to try Naturally Iowa's version. It is available here at Hy-Vee. They also bottle under other names, but you will see the "bottled by Naturally Iowa" on the label.

Why am I plugging organic milk, you say? Glad you asked. My dad works for Naturally Iowa for one. Organic milk is better for our children and our cows, for two. AND they use plastic made out of corn! You don't need to recycle the bottles because they go back to the earth in one cycle (you can compost them though). It feels a little weird to throw your plastic bottle away, but it goes right back where it came from.

Organic milk is a little pricier but it is definitely worth it. We think this milk is the tastiest of all organic brands. Please read more about this amazing company here and then go out and drink some! They also make drinkable yogurt with live and active cultures and delicious ice cream!

Eden: Who was that [on the phone]?
Me: Daddy.
Eden: What did he say?
Me: He can't come to the beginning of your ice skating lesson because he is stuck at work.
Elly, comes rushing in from the other room: Is he ok? Can he get out?
Me: He is fine...he is not actually stuck, he is busy at work.
Eden: Yeah, it just means he can't leave. It's not like when you get your head stuck in your shirt or something like that.

Elly's Big Leap

Today, my friend and fellow old town NoLibber, Mindy, called to invite us to her family's pool. Hot as it has been, we thought that sounded great. I did not bring water wings for the kids because Mindy told me there were some there. We get there, I get the girls in some sunscreen and begin talking to the other moms, and Elly, who usually has water wings on, LEAPS into the pool! I was on the pool steps, just a couple feet from her. I start to go in after her, but I am slow, so Carrie calls from behind me, "Will she be ok?" (meaning, can she swim?) and I calmly answer, "No," as I am trying to get to her. Carrie jumps out of her chair and over my head and grabs her up. Elly was not upset in the least, she had been under for about 30 seconds max (probably less) but she did not freak out or flail, she just did the newborn swim thing, like the baby on the Nirvana album cover. (You know what I'm talking about?) Thank the Lord and Carrie for that. I knew I could have gotten to her, but Carrie was quicker and I am thankful for her skills! Elly continued to be fearless in the pool and jumped in a few more times, going completely under, before I strapped her in a life jacket. The good thing was I never let her get out of my reach after the first incident, so she didn't stay under for long. Oh, these challenge-seeking kids!! Wow. I was proud of myself though for staying calm and even though Carrie got her, I was confident that I could have in another second or two.

Eden showed lots of confidence as she went down the slide and swam in the deep end. She was told to use a floatie in the deep end, but I think she could swim pretty easily even without it. She is a fish, just like her daddy. Neither of the girls seem to have a problem with getting their faces wet! I would have taken pictures but I was so stunned after having to save Elly in the first 5 minutes there, that I didn't think to get it out!

Edenisms, Part 25

Eden and I were on the porch at my parents farm. Eden asked,

"What is Momma Kitty's name?"
I answered, "It's just 'Momma Kitty.'"
She replied, "Well, I think she needs a more distinguished name."

Then in the next breath, she told me,

"At the park, a butterfly flew down and landed right on my shoulder! I was surprised she chose me for her perch."

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!

As some of you know, in High School my BFF was an exchange student from Tamana, Japan. She and I were two peas in a pod. We bonded over Junior Mints and we drove around town in my little white Chevy Nova! We stayed in touch in college but then lost each other. Through a series of Facebook contacts and some awesome people in Clarinda, I found her again!! Finding her was on my Thirty Things Before Thirty List. I got in touch with her yesterday! Yay!!!

Hi Kaori!! :)

04 August 2008

Thirty is the New Awesome.

I was honestly not dreading this birthday...though I always thought I would. Thirty. It used to sound old, but now I realize that a thirty year-old can still look stylin' in a sparkly nose ring :)

The weekend was fantastic. We went to Clarinda on Friday afternoon, spent the evening with my parents at the farm, stayed up late laughing and talking and then went to bed. I really had no idea that we would celebrate my b'day any way but maybe going out to dinner or something later in the weekend. Saturday I spent time with my Grandma cooking and talking while Eden played with the old toys that used to occupy me at Grandma's house. Then we went to Doug and Heidi's for a fun family evening spent with Dan's brothers and sisters and their family, specifically because Angie was in town with her little girls, and we hadn't seen Trish's newest addition either. So Aunt Shaddey had a lot of fun trying to figure out how to hold two babies at once and got a really nice baby fix. Alivia, who is 6 days older than Layla, is super smiley and sweet. Layla is a real snuggler, and though she likes her momma, she fell asleep on me for a good long time and I loved it.

Sunday morning, we woke up and Dan hurried me around and took me up to Lee's. We were only there an hour when he whisked me out of there. As we were driving up the road to my parents' farm, he turned into the park where I saw over 50 people in the 100 degree heat waiting for me! I was seriously surprised--I HAD NO IDEA that was going on. And apparently it had been happening all around me all day :) We had so much fun. Uncle Stubs made ribs just for me, Mom had a cake made with my favorite icing, and there was Grandma Ev's famous taco salad. Tiel made everyone say their name, who they belonged to, and an embarrassing story about me. It was great.

Next, we headed to Stubs' house for a pool party and more food. Tiel and I did matching canon ball dives and Terry almost shot us out of the pool with his can opener. I had so much fun I popped my nose ring out.

Tiel and I schemed to stay an extra day at Mom and Dad's so we drove home together on Monday. Dan had arranged a babysitter and an evening out for dinner. I got home at 4:30--there were roses on the table. Darin showed up to babysit at 5:30pm. I got dressed up a little and we headed out. On the way there, I said, "Where are we going?" Dan answered, "HuHot." I said, "Do we have to go to HuHot?" Dan: "Yes." Well, that got me suspicious. Anytime we go out, there is this long conversation of "Where do you want to go?" "I don't care, where do you want to go?" So the fact that he was being so definitive seemed odd. I was in the mood for shrimp, anyway! So after a month or so of keeping quiet and pulling off one surprise party already, he cracked a little. He smiled so I left it alone. He stalled me for a little while, and then we went to HuHot where he gave me a hilarious card in the car, then walked me in to HuHot and as we got to the door, pulled out a necklace and put it on me....and if that wasn't enough...then lead me to a table full of girls that I love! Then he gave me some cash, a kiss, and said, "Happy Birthday, and part of the surprise is that I am going home. Have fun!" I had a blast with my twelve gal pals. We ate yummy food and then chatted so much the waiter had to yell to get our attention :) Then Kate, Kel, and Liz took me out for ice cream! Oh, wait, there's more...

When I got home at 10pm, Dan had a homeade almond cake waiting for me and a pint of DQ in the freezer! Though I was FULL we ate a little cake together! There is still a little stack of gifts on the table labeled "MOM" but I am going to wait til my precious girls are up to open them.

What a birthday! I feel like this year I had enough birthday surprises to last another 30 years! Thanks to all my wonderful friends and sisters for sharing this milestone with me! Here's to entering my "wisdom years!"

My Other Children...

One of my acrylic children has found a new home at the McCarragher's!

That's Off the Nuk Yo

I think I am going to declare, like Andrea on the potty training, Elly is officially off the nuk! She hasn't even mentioned it for a couple of days and has been sleeping normally! Yay! And I really have high hopes that she is not scarred for life :)
